Blind Resumes Week 4

Blind Resumes Week Four

This past week the NCAA Tournament committee got together and came up with their Top-16 teams. Two teams (Arizona and Oklahoma) came into question for many College Basketball fans, see why these two teams got the nod over two teams that others thought would make it into the Top-16 over Arizona and Oklahoma.

Team A: Record: 20-6, RPI: 18, SOS: 39, Group 1 Record: 3-3, Group 2 Record: 6-3, Group 3-4 losses: 0

Team B: Record: 16-8, RPI: 21, SOS: 17, Group 1 Record: 6-5, Group 2 Record: 2-3, Group 3-4 losses: 0

Team C: Record: 20-3, RPI: 5, SOS: 36, Group 1 Record: 1-3, Group 2 Record: 5-0, Group 3-4 losses: 0

Team D: Record: 23-4, RPI: 36, SOS: 126, Group 1 Record: 5-3, Group 2 Record: 1-1, Group 3-4 losses: 0

Can you guess who these four teams are?

When looking at these four teams, one thing came to mind and that was who got the most wins. Obviously, with teams C and D they had the better records and when looking at other things (RPI and Group 1 wins) these two teams were better, however, the Selection Committee showed that good wins would be rewarded and because of that Teams A and B were selected over Teams C and D.

Arizona: Record: 20-6, RPI: 18, SOS: 39, Group 1 Record: 3-3, Group 2 Record: 6-3, Group 3-4 losses: 0

Oklahoma: Record: 16-8, RPI: 21, SOS: 17, Group 1 Record: 6-5, Group 2 Record: 2-3, Group 3-4 losses: 0

Rhode Island: Record: 20-3, RPI: 5, SOS: 36, Group 1 Record: 1-3, Group 2 Record: 5-0, Group 3-4 losses: 0

Gonzaga: Record: 23-4, RPI: 36, SOS: 126, Group 1 Record: 5-3, Group 2 Record: 1-1, Group 3-4 losses: 0

Here’s my outlook on how each team was selected by the committee:

Arizona was selected because they had 9 combined Quadrant 1 and 2 wins along with no groups 3 and 4 losses. The thing the committee specified was getting a lot of road wins and Arizona had 6 road wins.

Despite the outrage as the Sooners have struggled of late, Oklahoma still has six Quadrant 1 wins, which was much more than the other teams. They also have the best strength of schedule of all these teams, so if the committee is going to want teams to get good wins and play a tough strength of schedule, Oklahoma has to be in the top-16.

Rhode Island was not selected because of their lack of Quadrant one wins. I thought their RPI ranking of 5 would get them in but with the committee establishing that you need a lot of wins, this seems logical.

After dismantling St. Mary’s on Saturday, most thought the Bulldogs were going to get in the Top-16. While they do have the Quadrant one wins that compare with Oklahoma and Arizona, they don’t have a good enough RPI or Strength of Schedule to compete for a four seed.

Overall the committee showed to us that the thing that matters most is who you beat and given that, it is easy to see how they selected Arizona and Oklahoma as their final two teams.
